Piel

Piel/Skin
Lately, I've been trying to be more expressive in my work. I think is vital for anyone to be true to oneself, and I have chose this art path to be able to communicate things I am not able to say freely in "real" life. So, though I was reluctant to draw these kind of drawings at first, I´m glad I did. Not only is it good for experimenting and learning about shape and human form in another style, it also very cathartic and thus good for your inner balance.

Tools: Pen and marker on paper
Measurements: 70 x 49.5 cm

Medidas: 70 x 49.5 cm

Vertigo

Vertigo
Measurements: 40.x 29.7 cm
Diluted acrylic + black pen+ marker
This piece as well as other works like Despedida and Ofrenda, are drawings which I´m trying  to experiment more with anatomy, linework and concept. One of my art resolutions for this year is to try to be more honest and raw in my artworks, and to be more daring to show what I truly what to convey and not to be afraid about what others may think ( in a judgemental way, of course, constructive criticism will be always well received ).
I´m also studying Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt´s works, so you will definetely see some influences from their style as well.

Medidas 40 x 29.7 cm

Secretos

Secretos/Secrets
Continuing the series of illustrations, this time attempting to reach a middle-ground between something more graphic-designy and a proper digital painting. I worked very hard on the piece, specially to get the color pallete to be harmonious and the contrast relationships to be accurate. However, the file conversion from my photoshop file to a .PNG (JPEG´s quality was too bad, so it was quickly discarded) was a headache. I almost had to do 26 samples, before arriving to a decent result, and it has still lost a lot of the file quality and small gradients the original image had. Hopefully, this will not happen on the printing stage as well.
Regarding the concept, as you´ve probably noticed, I included  the lilies and the orchids again, since their meaning is quite opposite and appropiate to what I wanted to portray, alongside with the medieval simbolism of the unicorn.

Lamento

I´ve always found art to be a better healer than time.

Continuing the series of illustrations for the event in June 2014. This was quite experimental and it was heavily edited from the inicial sketch. I am trying to make a dialogue with the drawing, to what it´s becoming, instead of imposing my own will completely to it.
Tools: black marker (sharpie), black pen, photoshop

Jugar

This is part of a series of illustrations I am preparing for an upcoming event in June 2014. I tried to experiment quite a bit with the technique, and to return to my drawing roots, and to be attentive to line weight and color combination in a two-dimensional scheme.

Sueños de Papel Part 2

"Sueños de Papel" is a comic project started in the year 2010, the summer I left design university to follow full-time art studies. The thought that drove me the most to make the decision, was the fact that I had to fight for my dreams- as cliché and corny that might sound. What if one day I woke up with my whole life almost gone, only to realise I had never fought to achieve what I truly wanted? "Sueños de Papel" is about that feeling, about being in a life-turning point.

It was my first proper comic, and the first version can be found in this entry (http://rominasantanaart.blogspot.com/2011/12/suenos-de-papel-comic-pages.html) The first version was submitted for a local contest but it didn´t win. The more recent version (posted here) was submited for another contest in 2012. But it didn´t win either. That news were hard to swallow, but I´ve learned to let go of that bitterness. I think it`s important, to learn when things just don´t work and move on. And I´m not just talking about comics, it can be applied to any aspect of your life . You stand up again, and try. You fail. Try again. And again. There is always something new to create .

Chapter 1 of the second version of "Sueños de Papel"

CD cover

Front cover

This a a cd cover for Maafaka, a new rap band of a high school friend. The making
of the cover was quite challenging, since I had to step out of my comfort zone, but overall I am pleased with the designs, and glad to have finally had the opportunity to work in a cd cover. (Something I have always wanted to do). Here is the link to their facebook site, so you can download the CD or buy it!

Fashion Designs!

This was part of a class assignment where we had to come up with a creative drawing inspired by the still life shown below. It was also a great chance to practise my watercolouring skills, which are still very messy, but hopefully they will improve in due time =). I was also pretty glad to focus on fashion for a change, rather that an overcomplicated illustration. I guess sometimes less is more!
